How does Acupuncture work?

Eastern Medicine in general (Acupuncture, Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine etc.) involves treating the root patterns of disharmony in one’s constitution that is causing the condition being reported by the patient. For example, one person experiencing say a headache may have a different root pattern that is causing that headache versus another person experiencing the same headache. Once the root pattern is diagnosed, a treatment plan is put together based on varied principles of therapy and administered on the patient. It may take more than one visit to address a specific root pattern. Keep in mind that there may be more than one root pattern that may be causing the dis-ease the patient is experiencing and hence continued visits with the Acupuncturist will help optimize and maintain a healthy life.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Most of the time people may experience a slight pinch that quickly goes away. In vast majority of cases there is no noticeable pain. It is mainly the anticipation of a prick than the actual needling that can cause some people distress. Most of the time the treatment happens on a massage table with the patient comfortably lying down. This results in the patient like getting into a restful sleep as the needles are staying for the duration of the treatment (usually 20-30 minutes).

How long does it take to see results?

This varies from patient to patient and also depends on the condition being treated. Issues related to pain usually respond quickly to Acupuncture and people can see results after only a few needles are inserted or within a couple of treatments. Other issues that are more systemic in nature – like endocrine, allergy, asthma etc. that are long standing – can take several treatments to resolve or to see progress. Acupuncture, like other eastern medicines, is a time and space medicine where patience and potentially life style changes vastly help in seeing quicker results.
